As a residential college in which 95% of students supposedly live on campus, Middlebury states that their “residential system embodies that culture of living, learning, and growing together.” The close-knit, intimate housing community on campus is widely touted as one of the hallmarks of student life on our liberal arts campus. Yet, after the last two housing draws, students have found themselves in singles far away from their friends, forced to live off campus at places like the Inn on the Green, or placed en masse in August draw. Over-enrollment coupled with a lack of housing availability continues to jeopardize the residential student experience that our college professes to hold so dear.

Middlebury continues to house students off campus at the Inn on the Green for the fall 2022 semester — despite a decrease in overall student enrollment compared to last year — due to insufficient housing on campus.

Blue hair, hoarse voices, broken records and a conference championship title — following the NESCAC Championship meet last weekend, women’s track & field has a lot to celebrate. Driven by four first-place and two second-place finishes, the Panthers scored 149 points, earning their first league title since 2000.

While I love the iconic panther statue and #rollpants as much as the next Midd Kid, I can’t help but wonder why a school in rural Vermont has a black panther, which has never roamed the area, for a mascot. We’re among 33 colleges with this mascot, and the panther is the fourth most popular college mascot, following the bulldog, the tiger and the eagle. Surely, we can come up with a mascot that is more unique to Middlebury and better suits the character of the college.

The Middlebury we know today is not the same as the one we surveyed during the first Zeitgeist student body survey in 2019. We may have expected the college to change over these four years, and it did — entire classes matriculated and graduated, presidents were elected and impeached, social trends rose and fell, boats got stuck and unstuck in canals — but few could have foreseen the transformation that our community and our world would experience in that time.

On April 13, fellow NESCAC institution Williams College announced its commitment to move to a fully-grant based financial aid system, effectively eliminating loans and work study packages. This shift is said to benefit the 53% of students who are on financial aid, at a cost of 6.75 million dollars per year.

Whether there was magic in the air to celebrate the graduating seniors or a laser focus on securing the top seed in the NESCAC, the stars aligned for No. 1 women’s lacrosse (13–0) on Saturday in a fiercely anticipated matchup against No. 4 Colby (11–2). In what was expected to be a bloodbath for the conference lead, Middlebury dominated, 13–5, maintaining their perfect season record and taking another step towards NCAAs.

On a sunny day at Forbes Field, George Goldstein ’22 struck out the last batter of the game to secure Middlebury’s 6–2 win over Castleton University (6–15–1). Although technically just a non-conference win, for Head Coach Mike Leonard, this game marked something much bigger: his 200th win as Middlebury baseball’s head coach.

The college announced last month that it will implement a complete overhaul of its compensation structure, effective July 1. The decision is in part a response to an institution-wide wage study commissioned by the college that found Middlebury is currently paying 45% of its staff at rates below competitive market wages. The Mercer Study is a broad wage and salary survey across all departments commissioned by the college every few years and defines “competitive wages” as within 15% of the market median.

With luck, as a community we’re moving to an ‘endemic’ phase of Covid-19. As a community though, it’s time again to recognize the many endemic problems staff face at our institution, and talk about taking one or two off the plate before we add another.
