Whether there was magic in the air to celebrate the graduating seniors or a laser focus on securing the top seed in the NESCAC, the stars aligned for No. 1 women’s lacrosse (13–0) on Saturday in a fiercely anticipated matchup against No. 4 Colby (11–2). In what was expected to be a bloodbath for the conference lead, Middlebury dominated, 13–5, maintaining their perfect season record and taking another step towards NCAAs.

On a sunny day at Forbes Field, George Goldstein ’22 struck out the last batter of the game to secure Middlebury’s 6–2 win over Castleton University (6–15–1). Although technically just a non-conference win, for Head Coach Mike Leonard, this game marked something much bigger: his 200th win as Middlebury baseball’s head coach.

The college announced last month that it will implement a complete overhaul of its compensation structure, effective July 1. The decision is in part a response to an institution-wide wage study commissioned by the college that found Middlebury is currently paying 45% of its staff at rates below competitive market wages. The Mercer Study is a broad wage and salary survey across all departments commissioned by the college every few years and defines “competitive wages” as within 15% of the market median.

With luck, as a community we’re moving to an ‘endemic’ phase of Covid-19. As a community though, it’s time again to recognize the many endemic problems staff face at our institution, and talk about taking one or two off the plate before we add another.

Starting in the fall of 2022, Middlebury will offer half-credit courses, which will either run at full strength for just the first or second half of the semester or run at “half-strength,” meaning that the class will meet more infrequently than usual classes throughout the entire semester.

With Drake playing over the loudspeakers, heads turn as John Collins ’23.5 approaches the plate sporting a pair of neon pink cleats. Off to a fast start this spring, the catcher on men's baseball leads the NESCAC with six home runs on the season. He also sits first on the team in runs (14) and hits (18) on a .340 batting average.

Reported Covid-19 cases at Middlebury remained low in the week since students returned from spring break, after the college shifted to an optional mask mandate on March 18 and stopped requiring weekly Covid-19 testing on March 13. According to the college’s Covid-19 reporting dashboard, there are two active cases of Covid-19 on campus, one student and one faculty member, as of March 31.

Last week, Middlebury announced a 4.5% tuition increase for the 2022–23 school year, bringing the total price tag to $79,800. This is a significant increase compared to last year’s 2.5% increase and increases in previous years that hovered around 3%.

Middlebury’s new mask policy, which eliminates the mask mandate in all indoor spaces except classrooms and a few other designated areas, went into effect on Friday, March 18 at 3:00 p.m. The policy states that masks are optional, which means that those who wish to continue wearing masks may do so.

The Board of Trustees approved a 4.5% increase in tuition on March 15, raising the total cost of undergraduate tuition to $62,000 and room and board to $17,800 for the 2022–23 academic year. Additionally, the student activities fee will increase $20 to $460, bringing the total cost of attendance at Middlebury to more than $80,000.

On Friday, March 11, Sparrow Art Supply opened its doors for local Middlebury artists, students and other community members eager to explore the addition of a new shop on Main Street. The store is located at 52 Main Street, a few doors down from Buy Again Alley on the corner adjacent to the bridge over Otter Creek.

As Queen’s song “We are the Champions” rang through a packed Kenyon Arena, the Middlebury women’s hockey team celebrated their many accomplishments of the season: A 2022 NESCAC title, an undefeated season and revenge for their 2020 NESCAC Championship loss to Amherst.
