After a successful spring last season that saw women’s lacrosse, baseball, women’s track and field and men’s tennis all win championships, expectations for Middlebury sports teams are high for this spring. The sports editors for the campus came together to preview each team competing this spring.

Heart of Afghanistan graced Mahaney Arts Center on Jan. 13 with a performance, just under a year after their spring 2022 debut and days after their largest performance yet at the Kennedy Center. The group is made up of four performers: Afghan soap opera star and famous singer Ahmad Fanoos on vocals & harmonium, his sons Elham Fanoos and Mehran Fanoos on piano and violin and Hamid Akbar on tabla. The group performs songs that communicate Afghan history in both Pashto and Dari (Afghanistan’s two most common languages), ranging from Afghan folk songs to ballads inspired by the Afghan poet Rumi to modern love songs.

The Student Activities Office (SAO) announced in mid-October that club sports, a cappella groups and social houses were required to complete a new online anti-hazing training in.
The Evolution Dance Crew (Evo) made their debut for the semester with two back-to-back shows in Wilson Hall on Nov. 5. The show was titled “Love, Sex, and Magic,” a theme voted on by the group’s dancers because of its versatility and variety of interpretations. For some, the theme is about the joys and difficulties that come along with relationships with other people. For others, it’s about trusting oneself, trusting others and trusting the dance process.
Butch Varno, a lifelong resident of the town of Middlebury and a dear part of the Middlebury athletics community, passed away on Oct. 14. He was 75.

Taylor Swift simply can’t not top herself, and she proved that on her synth-pop-focused 10th studio album, “Midnights.” How can she out-do the most awarded country and pop albums of all time, a historic three Album of the Year wins at the Grammys and the highest grossing U.S. stadium tour in history, you ask? Well, she does it by doing what she’s always done: writing razor-sharp lyrics paired with carefully-curated production elements to develop ever-evolving bodies of work, each one more exciting than the last. Many people felt she couldn’t possibly improve upon the emotionally-ambitious, indie-folk surprise albums “folklore” and “evermore,” but with “Midnights,” she proved that emotional depth and intelligent songwriting don’t have to be sacrificed at the cost of upbeat pop production.

After spending the early years of his career known only for playing a severely underdeveloped supporting character in Disney’s fleet of modern “Star Wars” films, Englishman John Boyega has finally received his proper introduction as an actor. It comes in “Breaking,” the debut feature from director Abi Damaris Corbin that tells the heartbreaking true story of Lance Corporal Brian Brown-Easley. In 2017, the 33-year-old African American Marine veteran held up an Atlanta bank to protest Veterans Affairs’ failure to pay him the disability check he needed to survive. Boyega is powerful in his portrayal of Brown-Easley, at once channeling the crazed recklessness of Al Pacino in Sidney Lumet’s “Dog Day Afternoon” and evoking sympathy for a good man driven to criminality by a society that refuses to care for him. But for all the merits of his performance, “Breaking” is not Boyega’s movie, nor Corbin’s, nor any of the other impressive actors or crew. Rather, it belongs to the men and women who served the United States overseas only to be forgotten upon returning home, especially those — like Brown-Easley — whose fight to be heard is further beaten down by racism.

This past weekend, the Middlebury Maple Run was held for the first time since 2019. Among the most widely-participated athletic events in Addison County, according to its website, the Maple Run has become one of the most respected races in New England. While the event’s main attraction is the 13.1-mile half marathon, the USA Track & Field-sponsored race also offered options of a 3-mile fun run and a relay.
This week, Middlebury’s chapter of the AAUP published an op-ed in The Campus calling for a 10% faculty wage increase, which they state is still less than the 16% they would be granted if raises were correctly adjusted for inflation. They note that “not investing in employees is a short-sighted strategy that will save some money now, but cost the College much more in the future.”

“Why on earth does Middlebury have six a cappella groups?” Or so I asked myself on a Sunday as I sat in the Chapel and watched each group perform a song at the annual “A Cappella Jambo” to advertise their upcoming auditions. For such a small college, Middlebury has an astonishing variety of a cappella groups. So, on Tuesday, Sept. 13, I took it upon myself to try out for each one, with the goal of answering one question: what makes each of these groups so different from the other five?
