Few athletes get the distinct honor of representing their country in sport. Even fewer of those athletes are from Division III colleges. Yet on Sept. 26, Freddy Mosier ’23 took the mound for Team Great Britain in the European Baseball Championship, helping the British to an 11-10 victory over Italy.

The track team routed the competition on Saturday at the Middlebury Outdoor Invitational. It was not particularly close, with the women’s team scoring 418 points compared to second place Plattsburgh State (108.5 pts) and third place Union (85.5 pts). The men’s team also came in first place of the seven team’s competing, scoring 398 points.

With warm temperatures finally melting out Forbes Field, the baseball team (12–6) opened up their first homestand of the year with a tough 9–8 loss to Wesleyan University (9–10) in a 10-inning affair.

The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) awarded Charlotte Marks ’23.5 the Division III National Scholar Award. The NFHCA created the award in 2014 to honor the All-American with the highest cumulative GPA through the first semester of the academic year. Marks, with her 3.97 GPA and molecular biology and biochemistry major, is the first Middlebury athlete to win the prize.

After a successful spring last season that saw women’s lacrosse, baseball, women’s track and field and men’s tennis all win championships, expectations for Middlebury sports teams are high for this spring. The sports editors for the campus came together to preview each team competing this spring.

Charlotte Marks ’23.5, from Manchester, Mass., is a Senior Feb on the Field Hockey Team. She plays defense and has been named to two NFHCA All Region First Teams and two All-NESCAC Second teams. Women’s rugby faced a difficult, albeit gratifying, season of rebuild this fall. With a 1–5 finish, Captain Emma Doubman ’22 said it felt like an in-between sort of season.

On Sept. 24, Middlebury Football cruised to victory in their exciting home opener. The team looked confident and driven in a cohesive win over the Wesleyan Cardinals (2–1) on Youngman Field.

Following impressive postseasons last spring, Middlebury’s ultimate team, the Pranksters, are looking to revamp the team this fall to prepare for the spring 2023 season. Unlike last year, when the Pranksters competed in a fall tournament to make up for the lost season of spring 2020, this year looks set to be a return to normal for the men’s and women’s squads. The fall season, played with much lower stakes, represents a chance for the first-year class to gel with the rest of the team.

Middlebury baseball’s strong season continued into the playoffs this past weekend as the Panthers beat Tufts in a best-two-out-of-three NESCAC quaterfinal series on home soil. The top-seeded Panthers knocked off the Jumbos in Sunday’s decisive third game after a split doubleheader the day before.

Playing a college sport is difficult, but for Jordan Saint-Louis ’24, filming them presents its own challenges. This spring, Saint-Louis teamed up with Middlebury Athletic Communications to film select varsity games. So far, he’s made six short films.

If Alec Ritch ’23 could pick a signature moment from this season, it would be Middlebury’s doubleheader sweep of Williams on Sunday, April 17. Not only did the wins help Middlebury to their record-setting win streak, but the victories were also fueled by Ritch’s heroics.
