“Why on earth does Middlebury have six a cappella groups?” Or so I asked myself on a Sunday as I sat in the Chapel and watched each group perform a song at the annual “A Cappella Jambo” to advertise their upcoming auditions. For such a small college, Middlebury has an astonishing variety of a cappella groups. So, on Tuesday, Sept. 13, I took it upon myself to try out for each one, with the goal of answering one question: what makes each of these groups so different from the other five?

In the summer of 2020, Middlebury students, alumni and activists rallied together in support of Black Lives Matter and formed a coalition to work towards dismantling oppressive structures on our campus. The students forming this coalition came together from a number of groups including Concerned Students of Middlebury and Middlebury Cops Off Campus. Collaborating with student activists from other campuses such as the University of Vermont and with members of the greater Middlebury and Vermont community, we began an open dialogue with the administration to discuss ways in which we could make our community a space that actively combats racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia and religous discrimination.

“Top Gun” is not a great movie. It’s certainly good — it launched Tom Cruise into superstardom and boasts one of the most iconic soundtracks in Hollywood history — but the juvenile dialogue and stilted action will always bar director Tony Scott’s 1986 classic from greatness. The same cannot be said for its sequel 36 years in the making. Propelled by thrilling aerial sequences and an endearing story that pivots seamlessly from one emotional tone to the next, “Top Gun: Maverick” soars beyond its predecessor to remind us of the joys of experiencing not just a well-executed sequel but an original blockbuster film.

Each year, the Mahaney Arts Center (MAC) hosts internationally-acclaimed performances every couple of weeks — and this year they range from healing sound baths to world-renowned classical musicians. Of the many weekly activities at Middlebury, the arts offerings, and the “long” walk to the MAC, can fall behind on students’ to-do lists, but the upcoming season is not one to miss. It is safe to say that Allison Coyne Carroll, director of the Performing Arts Series at the MAC, has outdone herself.

Thirteen years ago, the words of Dana Walters ’12 rattled the community of Middlebury College and sparked a conversation that was long overdue. She claimed that our “active” culture has manifested an unhealthy, toxic environment in which students are vulnerable to disordered eating and exercise habits. Walters’ wake-up call to the college made headlines, even appearing in The New York Times. However, this negative attention was not enough to incentivize the administration to bring mental health resources to the college, let alone reflect upon its systems that could be amended to catalyze prevention.

Blue hair, hoarse voices, broken records and a conference championship title — following the NESCAC Championship meet last weekend, women’s track & field has a lot to celebrate. Driven by four first-place and two second-place finishes, the Panthers scored 149 points, earning their first league title since 2000.

The Middlebury we know today is not the same as the one we surveyed during the first Zeitgeist student body survey in 2019. We may have expected the college to change over these four years, and it did — entire classes matriculated and graduated, presidents were elected and impeached, social trends rose and fell, boats got stuck and unstuck in canals — but few could have foreseen the transformation that our community and our world would experience in that time.

For this article, I wanted to spend time documenting students who identify as musicians at Middlebury, whose rich musical history extends from Tony-award winning Anaïs Mitchell to the infamous viral “MiddKid” music video. Though hailing from different backgrounds and styles, they are all brought together by their love and passion for music.

…or Mabrouk a thousand times. Or even a million times. In English the word is translated to congratulations. It is one of the expressions that we use frequently in the Arab world. We can say it to congratulate friends and loved ones on happy occasions, whether small or big. For example, marriage, college acceptances, graduating from university, welcoming a new baby, getting a new job or even buying a new phone. We derived the expression from "Allah Ybarik feek," which in English means, may God bless you. Mabrouk may also be a person's name for men: (Mabrouk) or for women: (Mabroukah). Lastly, in Ramadan (the holy month where Muslims fast) which we are currently observing, the most common way to wish someone a happy Ramadan is by saying “Ramadan Mubarak.”

After more than a dozen years under the name English and American Literatures (ENAM), the ENAM department will become the English Department, under the designation ENGL, beginning July 1, 2022. Department Chair Brett Millier announced the change to majors and minors on Friday, May 15, telling students that the change had been made and approved last fall because members of the department felt that the "English and American" name implied that courses in the department only teach national literature, which they do not.

With luck, as a community we’re moving to an ‘endemic’ phase of Covid-19. As a community though, it’s time again to recognize the many endemic problems staff face at our institution, and talk about taking one or two off the plate before we add another.
