While Middlebury students often scatter across the globe after graduation, some chose to remain in Vermont and work for the college or return many years later to their alma mater. According to Maggie Paine, director of advancement at the college, 7% of college faculty and staff are alumni. The Campus wanted to know how those alumni who have remained at the college see their time as MiddKids in relation to their current roles at the college, and how the campus has changed since their time as students.

While the “Feb identity” has rightly been deconstructed in recent years, there are still some Febs who wear the tropes well. Lee Summers ’24.5 is one such quintessential Feb. He plays rugby and studies Ancient Greek at Middlebury. He resides in Houston (and will let you know it), and he picked up a quirky new hobby over his Febmester: bluegrass.

Middlebury Language Schools announced on Feb. 11 that they will partner with Goucher College in Baltimore to launch a 4+1 masters program, offering Goucher students the opportunity to pursue dual undergraduate and graduate degrees including a Master of Arts of Applied Languages in either French or Spanish.

While many Middlebury students enjoyed the slower pace of J-term and the recent February break, Ali Nullmeyer ’24 and Michel Macedo ’22.5 were in Beijing, competing on the world’s highest athletic stage. Both members of the Middlebury alpine team, Nullmeyer (Canada) and Macedo (Brazil) raced in the slalom ski event at the Olympics.

The college shortened the required isolation period from 10 to five days on Jan. 14 after nearly 100 students tested positive within the first week of J-Term. The new policy is in line with Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines, and allowed students to shift their quarantine plans after the announcement.

Munras Housing at Middlebury Institute of International Studies (MIIS) in Monterey, California opened for the first time this academic year, marking the first time the Institute has offered student housing in Monterey. It provides fully furnished housing for up to 85 Institute students, with singles, doubles and triples as well as shared kitchens, bathrooms, study spaces and common areas. The college is hoping that the new housing will make the program more accessible for students.

Take a “Midd Night Stroll” through downtown Middlebury on Dec. 2, 9 and 16 from 5–8 p.m., for an evening of extended shopping and events with promotions, prizes and new pop-ups. After cancellations last year due to concerns about the potential spread of Covid-19, many local businesses and organizations are excited for the return of this annual tradition.

This year, we’ve editorialized on the urgent need for mental health services and staff wage increases, highlighting vast funding gaps in areas that should be the college’s top priorities. Meanwhile, Middlebury is touting the unprecedented growth of its $1.5 billion dollar endowment, and the college has announced plans to draw only $55 million from the endowment this year. At 3.67% of the total endowment, this draw is $6 million less than the withdrawal last fiscal year.

This past weekend, six fall varsity teams competed in NCAA Tournament competition. Most squads traveled out of Vermont for their matches, although field hockey, thanks to their record, hosted other schools. From cross country to volleyball, here is how each team fared:
