Debbie Gardner of New Haven brought her 4- and 7-year-old grandchildren to Middlebury’s Retro Realm arcade on a recent Thursday so that they could play alongside other kids. But when she spotted familiar games from the arcades of her teen years — including an original 1981 Ms. Pac-Man — she joined right in.

Over the summer, long-planned renovations to the first year residence Stewart Hall began. The renovations will update aging facilities in the dormitory as well as support Middlebury’s Energy2028 initiative by installing an energy-efficient geothermal HVAC system.

The college announced on May 1 that it had received 11,831 applications for the class of 2029 and 2029.5, a six percent drop from last year’s 12,540. Meanwhile, the overall acceptance rate increased to 13.9% from last year’s 12%.

What began in the 2010s as a neutral descriptor for diversity and affirmative action programs which emerged in the decades following the Civil Rights Act of 1964 has recently evolved into a politically charged buzzword. Today, it has morphed into perhaps the most divisive three-letter acronym in America.

Hope Shue ’25 is a co-captain of the Middlebury women’s lacrosse team and a neuroscience major. This spring, she set a new program record for career goals, surpassing the previous mark of 228 set by Amy DiAdamo ’97. Shue now has 272 goals and counting. Over her career, she has earned Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors three times and has been named NESCAC Player of the Week five times. Recent cuts to the Department of Education by the Trump administration have shaken local school districts across the country, reaching Addison County schools that have faced declining student enrollment and currently rely on federal funding for a variety of purposes. Superintendents of local school districts have expressed their fears of possible funding cuts and voiced support for Vermont’s attempts to fight or impede the looming changes.

Middlebury has been named a Fulbright Top Producing Institution for the 15th consecutive year, with nine alumni teaching, researching and interning abroad on a Fulbright scholarship for the 2024–25 academic year. These Fulbright recipients have experienced recent uncertainty over their funding following the Trump administration’s attacks on higher education, efforts to cut federal spending on international aid and attempts to eliminate programs it believes promote “woke” ideology.

Last Saturday, the #15 nationally ranked Middlebury men’s lacrosse team hosted #7 Bowdoin College in its home opener. Despite a chilly breeze dropping the temperature to single digits, fans and families scattered throughout the stands at Youngman Field, rooting for the Panthers to get into the win column for the first time this season.
