Middlebury has received an unrestricted donation to the endowment of $40 million from the estate of M. Brooks Michel ’55. The college announced the gift in an email to faculty, staff and students on March 1, stating that Michel’s donation is the largest bequest — a gift as a part of a will or trust — ever received by Middlebury and the second largest donation in the college’s history.

A local yoga studio launched a Yoga Equity Project in an effort to address the disparities in access to yoga education. The program actively encourages and financially supports Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) in attending yoga classes at the Otter Creek Yoga Studio.

The Faculty Council passed a motion in an emergency meeting last Friday, Nov. 17 to extend the deadline to drop a course and invoke Credit/No Credit for the fall semester through Friday, Dec. 8.

Ivan Valerio ’26 passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at Middlebury College. Valerio, 19, was found outside of Gifford Hall early Tuesday morning.

Jeremy Ward, the Albert D. Mead professor of Biology, has been chosen as the next vice president for academic affairs. Ward will begin the position on July 1, according to an email President Laurie Patton and Interim Provost Michelle McCauley sent to the college community on May 16.

According to the Office of Assessment and Institutional Research, there are 306 students abroad this spring, most of whom are juniors. By the time a class at Middlebury graduates, nearly 60% of its members will have studied abroad.

Middlebury Union High School Principal Justin Campbell sent a brief letter to the school community on Jan. 23 announcing his resignation from the job. “After much contemplation, many conversations with family and some deep introspection, I have decided to resign my position,” Campbell’s letter said. “It has been a deep honor to be part of the MUHS community and I will cherish the memories I’ve made.”

As the creator of the Giving Fridge, Bethanie Farrell strives to alleviate food security in Vermont by increasing accessibility to nutritious,locally grown and prepared meals. The program provides the greater Addison County community with an average of 450 meals each week free of charge, thanks to funding mechanisms that include plants, grants and donations.

The North Branch School in Ripton will put on its annual student-created theater production this Friday and Saturday, April 14 and 15, at the Ripton Community House. This year’s show, titled “All’s Fair In Love and Business,” was written and will be performed by 26 students that all attend the school.

Last week, Vermonters gathered in municipalities across the state for Town Meeting Day. The annual event had the highest turnout of in-person town meetings this year since 2019. Meeting days primarily took place in a mailable ballot format the past two years due to Covid-19 restrictions.

The Lost Monarch Coffee Bar, located in the Stone Mill in downtown Middlebury, announced on Instagram in late January that it is closing permanently. Co-owners Matt and Alessandra Delia-Lôbo will continue to operate their other coffee shop, Royal Oak, located at 30 Seymour Street, with expanded hours.

Middlebury’s new staff compensation program — known as the “skill matrix” system — improved compensation for staff at the bottom of the pay scale, while 14% of staff did not receive a raise during the 2022–23 fiscal year.
