Letter To the Editor: The importance of a literary degree

Editor's note: This Letter to the Editor is in response to an Oct. 30 news piece reporting on English department vacancies and the importance of a literary degree.

I majored in English and Secondary Education. In a 50 year career, I taught all age levels from pre-school to college, trained organizational leaders, directed a state-wide human service organization, and was responsible for programming and development in a quasi-municipal organization.

What did my career require? To quote Professors of English Brett Millier and Jay Parini: “Critical reading, writing compelling arguments”, and “developing a personal voice.” Essential skills for writing grants, legislation, and compelling speeches to potential donors and investors, presenting a case, and developing and sending marketing and training materials.

What is the value of literature? The qualities of being human are reflected, absorbed, and mirrored in literature. We become our best selves through reading literature, beginning in childhood and continuing through life.

Experience tells me that students must be prepared to think and write for themselves. STEM graduates will need those essential skills to succeed in the realms they will encounter. There are times when you must be your authentic self to succeed. For people in STEM fields, the need to read, research, write and publish is crucial. How to prepare? Be well read! Learn to write well!

For all who hope to be successful in fulfilling relationships, have a family, be a true friend, a reliable colleague, and a contributing member of the community, you must be well-rounded. The study of literature is foundational for expanding your world.
