Middlebury’s Edgewater Gallery is a bastion of the fine arts in Addison County, and the state of Vermont. Its two locations, on Merchant Street and Mill Street are filled with artwork, mostly paintings, as well as some photography, ceramics, and woodwork. Light jazz music fills the space, providing another layer of calm.

December is upon us, and with it the lovely and long-awaited Finals Season. The days are shorter; your once enjoyable afternoon class now feels like a time warp when you leave only to find it is pitch black outside. We now layer up to brave the long walks between classes, just to feel suffocated when stepping into the intense Proctor heat. Morning conversations of “How’s it going?” have turned from lighthearted to the simple “It’s going.”

The Middlebury football team finished the year 7–2 as the NESCAC runner-up behind Trinity College (9–0). This year showed a significant improvement from the Panthers’ 3–6 season last year, marking a solid final stretch for Bob Ritter, who completed his final year as head coach.

Approaching the end of a dominant season, there is no doubt that Middlebury has more than a few critical players that have contributed to the success they have found on the field; yet, this year, three stars, Katie George ’23.5, Amy Griffin ’24.5 and Charlotte Marks ’23.5 stand out as All-Conference winners for their consistent and unrelenting efforts on the field, guiding the team to its fifth consecutive NESCAC title, 50th NCAA tournament win and to the NCAA Final Four, with a chance to compete for another National Championship.

Women’s rugby faced a difficult, albeit gratifying, season of rebuild this fall. With a 1–5 finish, Captain Emma Doubman ’22 said it felt like an in-between sort of season.

Many eager admirers of classical music braved the inclement weather and made the journey to Robison Hall on Friday, Nov. 11, when the Castalian Quartet returned to Middlebury for the first time since 2019. Named for the Ancient Greek spring that bestowed poetic inspiration upon those who drank its waters, the quartet compelled its audience to leave their soaked raincoats and dripping umbrellas at the door and dive headfirst into the mythic currents of its stunning music.

The Middlebury College Orchestra held its fall concert on the evening of Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Olin C. Robison Concert Hall in the Mahaney Arts Center. Over the course of two hours the group of nearly 70 student musicians and visiting professionals played to a packed hall of Middlebury students, parents and community members. Leading the orchestra was conductor Evan Bennett, a Juilliard-trained musician who also directs the Northeastern University Symphony Orchestra.

At a small liberal arts college like Middlebury, one would think that a strong overlap between the arts and athletics would be both inherent and central to the campus community. However, whether it be based on the fact that students only have so much time or whether there is a cultural divide between the athletes and the arts, students can have a tendency to pick one or the other. The Campus spoke with some varsity athletes who are also majoring in the arts to ask them how they do it and what they think of this supposed cultural split.

As millions of Americans cast their midterm ballots across the country on Tuesday, Nov. 8, residents of the nine Vermont towns that compose the Mount Abraham Unified School District (MAUSD) and the Addison Northwest School District (ANWSD) decisively rejected a proposal to merge districts in a 4,282 to 1,886 vote.

The University of Vermont’s Board of Trustees voted on Oct. 27 to freeze current tuition rates for the fifth consecutive academic year. The trustees also approved freezing room and board fees for the fourth year in a row. According to Financial Services at UVM, the current annual tuition for undergraduates is $16,280 for in-state students and $41,280 for out-of-state students.

In a contentious Town of Middlebury Selectboard meeting in late August, wherein several town residents gave public comment about issues related to off-campus student housing, mostly regarding noise and parties, some residents argued that the definition of student housing as having “four or more people” in the April 2022 Amendments to the Zoning & Subdivision Regulations should apply to the entire structure rather than per unit.

First-year orientation in September and February plays a crucial role in shaping the experiences of incoming students and the culture of our campus community. It is the first opportunity students have to get to know the new people and places that will surround them for the next four years. For every first year, it is a time filled with uncertainty and anxiety over finding community, feeling included and accepted, and figuring out whether Middlebury will be a place where they can feel safe, feel loved, challenge themselves, grow and find joy.
