When the Center for Health and Wellness (CHW) recently announced the termination of the MiddSafe Hotline and Mental Health Peer Educators (MPHE) program, it cited a lack of student use as the reason. They pointed to the increase in mental health resources in the CHW as having supplemented the need for the hotline. They announced that their new program, Peers Educating for Affirming Relations (PEAR), will absorb the responsibilities of both MiddSafe and MPHE.

When I last wrote an op-ed about artificial intelligence (AI) in 2024, submissions created with the technology had sneakily won several art and photography contests. Now, it is consistently deceiving hundreds of thousands of internet users every day. Its content creation capabilities have improved so drastically that AI has officially breached into mainstream media with its use in postproduction effects for Netflix’s show “The Eternaut.” It is safe to say that, up to this point, at least, AI progress has been exponential.

ChatGPT was introduced to me in my sophomore year, the spring of 2023, by Professor of Writing and Rhetoric Hector Vila. We pasted our writing into the then-novel software, asked it for an improved version and reflected on what we liked about our work vs the robot’s. I watched my essay about my complicated relationship to my family in the Netherlands transform into something decidedly less authentic. I closed the tab, assured that the technology could never replace good human writing.

Foliage radiating across the mountains beyond the soccer pitch, large swaths of the football team squeezed into the film room, and packs of cross-country runners circling the grass fields into dusk are a few of the familiar fall sports sights at Middlebury. Yet none of these are as attention-grabbing, nor as fluorescent, as the college’s Nordic skiers zipping along the shoulder of South Main Street and through the town’s surrounding countryside in their neon gear. The bright garments, single-file procession, and rhythmic clacking of ski poles on pavement all comprise the ritual that is roller skiing.

In my return this year to my parents’ motherland, each meal was both an incredible joy and a marathon of appetite. For two weeks at the end of summer, I pilgrimaged to the two sides of the family in China. My father’s side lives mostly on the 16th floor of an apartment complex in the Southern metropolis of Guangzhou, Guangdong province. Stray cats and boisterous children congregate under the concrete awnings while elders chatter, fanning themselves beneath sprawling Banyan trees. My mother’s side lives in an older, quieter condominium neighborhood in the Northern prefectural city of Changzhi, where a man in a faded blue canvas uniform rings a bell in the evenings for residents to pick up bagged milk, and where after long summer days, people park their mopeds in the alley under powdery yellow lights. In both the north and the south, I felt incredible love through my Aunties’ cooking, and ate to new digestive limits to show mine.
