John McShea ’25 debuted his visual art collection “Dopamine” to an intimate crowd of friends and supporters on April 4. The paintings are complex explorations into how different sources of pleasure affect personal memory and nostalgia.

The college announced a series of cost-saving measures on Wednesday, April 2 that aim to cut over $10 million from the annual budget through reducing staff and faculty benefits and permanently raising the student enrollment projection to 2,600–2,650. The college attributed the changes to 15 years of consistent deficits, culminating in the unexpectedly high $14.1 million shortfall this fiscal year, a large portion of which is due to lower enrollment at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS).

Last Saturday, the #15 nationally ranked Middlebury men’s lacrosse team hosted #7 Bowdoin College in its home opener. Despite a chilly breeze dropping the temperature to single digits, fans and families scattered throughout the stands at Youngman Field, rooting for the Panthers to get into the win column for the first time this season.
Last Thursday, Middlebury softball held its season opening doubleheader at home against Clarkson University, winning both games. After a strong season last year with a 23–12 record, the Panthers are looking to build on previous successes as they start the 2025 season.
Approximately 125 Middlebury residents gathered for their annual town meeting on Monday, March 3, where they voted in favor of a $14,548,535 budget for the 2026 fiscal year. Of this year’s 10 articles, four were voted on directly in the meeting and the other six were voted on in a ballot election the following day.
As Middlebury moves forward in the process of designing its new art museum, the architects responsible for its construction have begun to solicit input from students and faculty. On Tuesday, March 4, architects Chelsea Grassinger and Hannah Bacon of Allied Works — who are spearheading the museum’s design — visited campus for a town-hall-style meeting to hear from students. The event marked their second visit to campus, having previously hosted a student listening session after a presentation on Jan. 16.
Over the past few months, an increasing number of incidents have disrupted shared public spaces on campus and prompted punitive responses from the college. After a series of thefts and acts of vandalism, the Anderson Freeman Resource Center (AFC) has decided to close their building after 4:30 p.m., limiting a space where cultural organizations and various students previously met, did work or shared in activities with each other. The college has announced plans to crack down on parking violations due to a high quantity of infractions this year that have frustrated college faculty and staff who need to access parking spots close to their offices. These violations of public space are not unprecedented at Middlebury — last year the college faced issues such as vandalism at The Knoll and computer monitors being stolen from Ross Dining Hall, among other incidents.
The Middlebury Board of Trustees approved a 4.5% increase in the annual undergraduate cost of attendance at its Feb. 7–8 meeting, raising the comprehensive fee from $86,850 to $90,756. At the same meeting, the trustees learned that the college’s budget deficit for the 2025 fiscal year is now expected to reach $14.1 million, about $5 million higher than the $8.9 million gap projected in October.

What began as the occasional disappearance of kitchen utensils has escalated into the theft of common space pillows, destruction of property and the general misuse of a facility meant to be a sanctuary for students in need of a safe space.

Vance arrived at Sugarbush Ski Resort in the Mad River Valley with his family for a ski vacation this past weekend, he was met by over a thousand protestors in Waitsfield and Warren, Vt. and at the mountain opposing his visit and the Trump administration. Meanwhile, a smaller group of locals took to the streets in a counterprotest, celebrating Vance’s arrival.
Under balmy 70-degree Georgia skies, the Middlebury men’s baseball team opened its 2025 campaign with a sobering reality check, dropping all three games to a battle-tested Emory University squad. The defending NESCAC champions showed clear signs of off-season rust as they were overwhelmed 19–5 and 12-2 in Saturday’s doubleheader, before falling 5–3 in a more competitive Sunday contest.

A rowdy crowd of nearly a thousand held their breath as Kylie Quinlan ’25 skated towards the goal, 5:07 elapsed in a tense back-and-forth overtime period. Quinlan, a flash of navy and white, pushing through a sea of purple Ephs jerseys, smacked the puck into the left corner of Williams’ net. Coaches, players and fans alike erupted.
Last Friday, the Middlebury men’s squash program bid farewell to its seniors in an emotional ceremony at the Bostwick Family Squash Center, marking the end of an era. The men's team, ranked 17th nationally, celebrated four departing seniors before playing MIT in the last game of their regular season: Captains Alexis Ballo ’25 and Nathan Feinstein ’25, alongside Julian Sandoval ’25 and Will Lichstein ’25. On Feb. 1, the 16th-ranked women's squash team honored captain Abby Holding ’25 in their game against Amherst college.
Executive orders, looming budget cuts and other changes to major federal agencies by the Trump administration pose a serious threat to over $6 million in scientific research funding at Middlebury this spring. Hundreds of thousands in grants have already been lost, prompting faculty to worry that their ongoing projects will be impacted next.
