Liv, Love, Local is a column highlighting local businesses of Vermont, especially cafés and restaurants in the Middlebury area. Through interviews with owners, I aim to highlight the specific successes and challenges that come with small business ownership in Vermont, the hard work owners and employees put into these businesses, and how these spots serve as places of community and connection building.

Although the fall season is short, it is off to a sweet start for both the men’s and women’s tennis teams. Both teams opened their season the weekend of Sept. 16 and have begun gearing up for the regional and cup Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) competitions.

While the word “harvest” is typically associated with farms, gardens and Thanksgiving, this year’s Bristol Harvest Festival had much more to offer — 70 vendors sold crafts, local goods and food while local musicians performed live music all day.

After over a year of renovations, the History of Art and Architectural Studies (HARC) department will celebrate the re-opening of the Christian A. Johnson Memorial Building on Sept. 28. The building is home to the Architectural Studies program and the Department of Studio Art, as well as the revived Exhibition Gallery and MakerSpace.

Back-to-school is always a busy time of year, especially at the mail center. It’s a guarantee that students will order larger items directly to school during move-in or have to place last-minute orders when they realize which dorm decorations they are missing. This year, however, on top of the typical early semester mail center commotion, there is a shortage of available mailboxes.

The student body is now very familiar with Middlebury’s pandemic-related over-enrollment issues. We have previously editorialized and reported on how the consistently larger-than-usual student body over the past three years has affected class size, dining hall lines, parking spaces and housing. Middlebury has taken numerous steps to manage over-enrollment, including purchasing the Inn on the Green and using the Breadloaf campus for upperclassmen housing.

I write this anonymously because I don’t want it to negatively impact my boss or their business, so please think of this as a public service announcement, rather than an accusation. There have been recent changes in how local restaurants are approached to cater events for Middlebury College groups and departments, and how this can negatively impact those restaurants must be addressed.

The Middlebury men’s and women’s tennis teams have continued their years of dominance this past weekend, as they both won their respective NCAA regionals. The women’s team won their seventh consecutive regional championship, and the men’s team won their eighth straight regional championship.

Middlebury Union High School Principal Justin Campbell sent a brief letter to the school community on Jan. 23 announcing his resignation from the job. “After much contemplation, many conversations with family and some deep introspection, I have decided to resign my position,” Campbell’s letter said. “It has been a deep honor to be part of the MUHS community and I will cherish the memories I’ve made.”

The Student Government Association (SGA) announced the creation of a new endowed fund called the “SGA Seizing Opportunities Endowed Fund” in conjunction with the Office of Advancement on Friday, April 28. The fund, which has a $3 million endowment goal and is currently at $680,398, will increase funding for the “Seizing Opportunities Fund” (SOF) to expand support for students with resources and opportunities that financial aid does not cover.

Middlebury’s 2022-2023 Narrative Journalism Fellowship (NJF) hosted a gallery-style listening event open to the Middlebury community in Axinn on May 4. The four Middlebury student fellows — William Reed ’23.5, Mira Irfan ’23.5, Kate Sadoff ’23.5 and Katherine Michaelson ’25 — conducted interviews with three to four Middlebury students each to produce short podcast profiles answering the project’s central question, “How did you get here?” Guided by English Department Scholar-in-Residence Sue Halpern, the fellows produced 14 final pieces in collaboration with Middlebury Magazine to capture a snapshot of the Middlebury student body.

As the curtain falls on the spring semester, a variety of shows and performers are coming to Town Hall Theater in downtown Middlebury. Highlights include “Small Mouth Sounds,” a comedy play performed by the Middlebury Acting Company, and a concert from The Grift, a band founded by two Middlebury College alumni.
