On Sunday afternoon, people from all over Vermont gathered at the Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society (CVUUS) for a meaningful dialogue featuring former Vermont Governor Howard Dean, gubernatorial candidate Esther Charlestin and Addie Lentzner ’27, a delegate to the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC). The dialogue focused on the importance of active participation in democracy, especially by women and young people. The speakers explored how everyone can engage more deeply in civic life, not only by voting in the upcoming presidential election, but also by taking part in local elections and community decision-making.

On Saturday evening, community members from the town of Middlebury and beyond gathered in the courtyard at the Henry Sheldon Museum for the "Mingle at the Museum" fundraiser, enjoying a night of live music, dancing, refreshments and a silent auction in support of the museum's future programs and events.

Addison West, a local home decoration business, relocated to the Stone Mill Public Market on Mill Street in January after nearly three years at its Main Street location. Sparrow Art Supplies, an art supplies stores and gallery, will take its place on Main Street after two years at their underground location next to the bridge over Otter Creek.

On the steps of the Vermont statehouse, former Middlebury College employee and Middlebury Union Middle School administrator Esther Charlestin announced the launch of her gubernatorial campaign. Delivering the announcement on Friday, Jan. 5, Charleston became the first Democrat to throw their name in the ring for the 2024 Vermont gubernatorial race.

For decades, the Black Student Union (BSU) has been a critical organization at Middlebury, dedicated to creating a safe and inclusive space for Black students. The BSU meets every Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in the Coltrane Lounge to foster meaningful conversations surrounding racial equity while addressing the unique challenges and isolating experiences of attending a predominantly white institution as a Black student.

The Student Government Association (SGA) announced the creation of a new endowed fund called the “SGA Seizing Opportunities Endowed Fund” in conjunction with the Office of Advancement on Friday, April 28. The fund, which has a $3 million endowment goal and is currently at $680,398, will increase funding for the “Seizing Opportunities Fund” (SOF) to expand support for students with resources and opportunities that financial aid does not cover.

Middlebury recently announced that the Innovation Hub will be receiving a $5 million gift from the Kelson Foundation in order to support creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship on campus. Eight months ago, Middlebury became a stop on Amtrak’s Ethan Allen Express, which runs from New York Penn Station to Burlington, Vt. As Middlebury’s first passenger train stop in nearly 70 years, the new station marks a major improvement in traveling convenience for both college students and town residents.

A new addition at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl will offer skiers an opportunity to hit the slopes later in the day. The college is planning to install LED light fixtures within the next year, allowing for night skiing.
