Evolution Dance Crew — better known as Evo — celebrated its 10th anniversary on April 20 with two sold out shows featuring 24 student-choreographed dances. The group’s first performance was sponsored by the Distinguished Men of Color at their Spring 2014 art showcase. Since then, the group has grown to include over 56 dancers, featuring dance styles ranging from Hawaiian Luau and Hip Hop to Latin, Korean pop and everything in between.

The Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS) is partnering with the China Scholarship Council to launch a new scholarship program beginning in the fall of 2024, intended to host 20 Chinese students at MIIS on a yearlong full-ride scholarship.

“Polaroid Stories,” a play by Naomi Iizuka and directed by Professor of Theatre Alex Draper was performed Nov. 30 through Dec. 2 in the Seeler Studio Theatre in Mahaney Arts Center. The play focuses on at-risk youth coming of age in New York City, filtered through the lens of Greek mythology and Ovid’s “Metamorphoses.” It was inspired by Iizuka’s work with at-risk teenagers who have fallen through the cracks of society and Jim Goldberg’s photo book “Raised by Wolves.”

In an evening of fatherhood, brotherhood, toxic masculinity and death, “Dad Rock,” Beck Barsanti ’24.5’s acting thesis explored what it means to be a man in the modern world. The work opened on Nov. 2 and was directed by Gavin Richards ’25.5, Bri Beach ’23.5 and Maggie Blake ’24.

Over 250 students attended “Gaza in Context,” a teach-in event led by Middlebury Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) on Wednesday, Nov. 1, featuring perspectives from members of the Middlebury community, students and faculty. The teach-in came at a time when SJP has been circulating a letter with over 500 signatories calling for the college administration to take a stronger stand condemning what they identified as human rights abuses against Palestinians.

As the leaves begin changing, so too are the lights in Wright Theatre and the Hepburn Zoo. Middlebury student theatre is back on its feet after a long summer, and the Middlebury community has much to look forward to this semester. Seven shows will be performed around campus — three directed by faculty and four by students.

After a summer filled with work, adventure and fun, Middlebury students have returned to their on-campus homes. Dorm rooms are not only sanctuaries for students’ studies, sleep and sometimes parties. They are a reflection of one’s humanity, an extension of the student soul. A true creative outlet, dorm rooms are a canvas of self-expression for students, lending themselves to key themes of independence and self-discovery for their inhabitants.

The student body voted on Monday, April 24 to elect Abed Abbas ’24 as president of the Student Government Association (SGA), with Fanta Diop ’25 & Tara Masri ’25 joining as his vice presidents. Approximately 44% of students eligible to vote, or 1,111 of 2,520 students, voted in the presidential election. This marks a substantial increase from last year’s election, where only 775 students participated in voting. Abbas received 773 votes and Aniketan Pelletier ’25, the other candidate, received 338 votes.

Victoria Keith’s ’23 senior thesis, “A Woman Left Lonely,” directed by Bri Beach ’23 and Sophie Butler-Rahman ’25, was an amalgamation of three Tennessee Williams plays: “This Property is Condemned,” “Talk to Me Like the Rain and Let Me Listen” and “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.”

This coming Monday, April 24 is the Student Government Association (SGA) presidential election. Next year’s SGA senators and president will work with the administration and advocate for the needs of the student body as well as allocate student activity funding and make appointments to student, faculty and trustee committees. This week The Campus interviewed each of the SGA candidates.

A group of Middlebury Ukrainian students and members of the community presented the ReUnited for Ukraine, a continuation of the United For Ukraine beneficiary concert, featuring musical and multimedia performances at the Mahaney Arts Center on Saturday, March 31. The evening’s message highlighted why Ukraine is fighting and what the country has to fight for. Audience members were also encouraged to donate to Ukrainian nonprofits to support the ongoing defense effort.

The Choral Chameleon Ensemble blessed the Middlebury campus for the second time in the 103rd season of the Middlebury Performing Arts Series on March 3. Unlike Choral Chameleon’s previous visit, there were no blindfolds or spiritual wind chimes to welcome audience members prior to the performance. Instead, Friday’s concert focused on change and the human ability to weather challenges, like the recent pandemic.

Middlebury Dining Services and college administrators are planning to construct a new cafe in McCardell Bicentennial Hall (BiHall), with a tentative completion date in fall 2023. The cafe will be located on the second floor behind the stairs and will serve grab-and-go coffee, croissants, pastries and sandwiches.
