The Middlebury Campus won the 2025 New England College Newspaper of the Year award in the college division of the New England Better Newspaper Competition. The contest is hosted by the New England Newspaper and Press Association (NENPA), which holds an annual convention to bring together and honor the best newspapers and news websites in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and Rhode Island.
Former Editor-in-Chief Madeleine Kaptein ’25.5, former Business Director and Sports Editor Ting Cui ’25.5 and current News Editor Rachelle Talbert ’28 attended the NENPA convention last weekend in Portsmouth, NH and received the award for The Campus at the ceremony on Saturday, March 14.
"It's very meaningful to be recognized for our staff's hard work," Kaptein said. "The issues we submitted for review were our special Election Issue and Zeitgeist Issue from last school year, which I think are especially representative of The Campus's willingness to go the extra mile in our reporting. We had a great time with the Addison Independent staff at the conference and are grateful to them for encouraging us to come learn about the journalism industry in New England and receive the award in-person."
The Addison Independent won numerous first-place awards within its circulation category, including first for General Excellence.
The judge's comments on the papers' entries will be available later in the week.
