Chateau Dining Room Closed

Author: Mary Mendoza

After much consideration, it has been decided that the language tables will remain in the Cook Dining Facilities and will not reopen in Le Château as previously expected.
"Times are hard," said Bethany Ladimer, professor of French. Apparently, it would just cost too much money to operate Le Château along with the College's four other dining halls. Middlebury just does not have the funds to support that this year, as a result of the increased cost of maintaining the new Ross facility.
On top of that, the number of language students at Middlebury is increasing dramatically, and Le Château is not big enough to accommodate such a large number of students. This would result in unnecessarily operating two language dining facilities simultaneously.
The change in location has caused some language aficionados to be concerned with the future of the language tables altogether. As Ladimer said, "I am hopeful that the custom of having language tables will remain a part of our programs here at Middlebury."
One French student added, "I think language tables are one of the most amazing things about Midd's program. It really helps students to feel comfortable practicing the spoken language. I guess it doesn't matter where they are, as long as we still have them."
Although Middlebury has changed the location of the tables, it looks as though they will remain a part of the language program.
"There is not talk of reopening the Château," stated Ladimer.
