The student body is now very familiar with Middlebury’s pandemic-related over-enrollment issues. We have previously editorialized and reported on how the consistently larger-than-usual student body over the past three years has affected class size, dining hall lines, parking spaces and housing. Middlebury has taken numerous steps to manage over-enrollment, including purchasing the Inn on the Green and using the Breadloaf campus for upperclassmen housing.

The Middlebury men’s and women’s tennis teams have continued their years of dominance this past weekend, as they both won their respective NCAA regionals. The women’s team won their seventh consecutive regional championship, and the men’s team won their eighth straight regional championship.

This weekend, the Middlebury men’s lacrosse team (16–2) looked to cap off a highly successful regular season with a NESCAC title. After a thrilling overtime win over Hamilton (14-13) last weekend in the opening round, the Panthers looked to continue their playoff success on Bello Field in Medford, Mass., against Williams.

Thor Sawin, associate professor at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies (MIIS) in Monterey, was named the new associate dean of curriculum of Middlebury Language Schools on April 20. Having taught German, English and linguistics at MIIS since 2013, he looks forward to strengthening the college’s reputation as a center for language instruction through new, collaborative initiatives at the college and beyond.

The Sheldon Museum, the oldest community-based museum in the nation, is experimenting with a new leadership structure by choosing to not fill the role of Executive Director. The community has been waiting for the response of the museum’s board since former Executive Director Stephanie Skenyon resigned abruptly in late January.

At It Happens Here, an annual tradition at Middlebury since 2011, members of the student body gather to hear the stories of sexual violence from their peers. This tradition began with Margo Cramer ’12 and Luke Carroll Brown ’13.5 as a way to give power to the voices of survivors. Elevating and recognizing narratives of sexual violence is important because these experiences have often remained unvoiced. We hope that in sharing stories as a collective, we foster a safe space for people to process their trauma.

During our years at Middlebury, many of us have grown accustomed to Vermont’s famously harsh winter conditions. Whether you’re a hardened New England native or a sun-tanned California beach-goer, we’ve all learned to cope with howling wind, sub-zero temps and every variety of frozen precipitation imaginable. This year, however, was a different story: temperatures soared into the 50s throughout December and January, a welcome change for many students and longtime Vermonters alike.

Middlebury plans to continue housing students in the Inn on the Green next year for the third fall semester in a row, due to an unusually small graduating class and uneven number of students studying abroad. The college has offered a $2,000 travel reimbursement for anyone willing to switch their spring study abroad semester to the fall, which about 20 students have accepted.

A fire at the American Flatbread restaurant in Marble Works on Monday, March 13 has been labeled as “suspicious” and is currently being investigated by the Middlebury Police Department.

For the majority of Middlebury’s spring sports teams, the seasons are going well. Most of the teams are shifting away from the out of conference portions of their schedules and beginning to play crucial games against their NESCAC rivals. This past weekend, Middlebury played a number of highly contested matches against regional foes.

The Middlebury baseball team opened their 2023 season on March 4 in Montgomery, Ala. at a tournament hosted by Huntingdon College. The team went 1–2 in their play during the tournament.

Middlebury saw an uptick in its applicant pool this year, with 13,297 applications for the classes of 2027 and 2027.5. Nearly 12,000 prospective students applied during the regular decision round, and more than 1,300 applied in Early Decision rounds I and II.

The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) awarded Charlotte Marks ’23.5 the Division III National Scholar Award. The NFHCA created the award in 2014 to honor the All-American with the highest cumulative GPA through the first semester of the academic year. Marks, with her 3.97 GPA and molecular biology and biochemistry major, is the first Middlebury athlete to win the prize.
