Following an undefeated season, Middlebury men’s soccer finally met its match this past weekend, falling 2–1 to a plucky Tufts University in a NESCAC semifinal matchup. The win marked a significant upset as the fourth seeded Jumbos knocked off the top-ranked Panthers on their home turf.

Middlebury students, administrators, faculty, alumni and the Board of Trustees gathered on Oct. 26 in the newly renovated Christian A. Johnson Memorial Building to celebrate the public launch of “For Every Future: The Campaign for Middlebury,” the college’s campaign to raise $600 million by June 30, 2028. The campaign has received $383 million and engaged 64% of alumni as of Oct. 31, funding plans to improve financial aid, academics and student experiences at the college.

My suitemate Vlera’s entire life can be viewed through the river of postcards that run down her wall. Ask her about the 4”x6” print from the Musee d’Orsay in Paris, and you’ll get an earful about her six-month-long battle with the common cold. Comment on her somewhat kitschy collection from Banff National Park, and she’ll recall the days she was so tired of hearing English at boarding school that she refused to speak anything but Albanian.

Since certified therapy dogs Milo and Stella joined Middlebury's Health and wellness program in 2022, the Center for Health and Wellness has been hosting open sessions with their two therapy dogs every Tuesday in an effort to boost students’ moods and bring joy to campus.

Amidst midterm stress and unpredictable weather, art serves as a means of relaxation. Local artist Molly Hawley’s exhibition “Extraordinary Ordinary: Landscapes and Portraits,” currently on display in the Jackson Gallery at Town Hall Theater, beautifully captures vivid fall foliage, seaside scenery and lifelike portraiture.

Every day, Middlebury students on skateboards, scooters and other forms of wheels spend hours flying back and forth on the asphalt outside of Proctor Dining Hall, rain or shine. While this space on Hepburn Road provides a location for these activities for college students, the town of Middlebury does not yet have a recreational skatepark available to locals.

On a recent Saturday morning in Bristol, every bright-yellow chair in Minifactory was occupied as the brunch crowd queued up to order their weekend treats. Minifactory opened in the spring of 2022 as a market and café that also serves as a home for the jam manufacturing of owner V Smiley’s jam company, V Smiley Preserves. Two years in, Minifactory has become an acclaimed destination, recently featured in the New York Times’ 36 Hours series on Burlington, Vt.

After 10 games of play, Middlebury men’s soccer remains undefeated with seven wins and three ties so far this year. They have earned four wins and two ties in the NESCAC after starting off conference games at home against Amherst on Sept. 9, where Harper Nicholl ’27 scored his first career goal midway through the second half to even out the game at 1–1. Since then, the team has maintained an impressive streak, including a strong 4–1 win over Hamilton College and a 2–0 shutout against Wesleyan University.

Former Middlebury faculty member and retired Dean of Vermont State University Castleton Honoree Fleming was fatally shot last week on the Delaware and Hudson Rail Trail just south of Castleton’s campus and 30 miles south of Middlebury, according to the Vermont State Police.

For decades, the Black Student Union (BSU) has been a critical organization at Middlebury, dedicated to creating a safe and inclusive space for Black students. The BSU meets every Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in the Coltrane Lounge to foster meaningful conversations surrounding racial equity while addressing the unique challenges and isolating experiences of attending a predominantly white institution as a Black student.

After years of planning, the Middlebury College Snow Bowl will finally open for night skiing this winter. In addition to its regular 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. hours Wednesday through Friday, the Snow Bowl will remain open for night skiing until 9 p.m.

There is no question that there is a strong culture on campus of athletics, even beyond students on varsity teams. Over the years, students have organized group fitness efforts to combine athletic pursuits and social life. Taking eight classes of one of the activities can even grant you a PE credit. For students looking for physical activity outside of solitary workouts at the athletics center, the student-led fitness classes this fall feature a wide range of opportunities to meet students at their own fitness level and interests.

This fall marks the first year that the Lincoln School District is operating as an independent supervisory school district for students in kindergarten through sixth grade, overcoming the challenge of withdrawing from its prior district to become established independently.

As the leaves begin changing, so too are the lights in Wright Theatre and the Hepburn Zoo. Middlebury student theatre is back on its feet after a long summer, and the Middlebury community has much to look forward to this semester. Seven shows will be performed around campus — three directed by faculty and four by students.
