Augusta Dixon ’24.5 of Middlebury women’s basketball was named NESCAC player of the week on Jan. 8. Dixon earned the honor after helping the Panthers to a 3–0 week, including a pair of NESCAC wins. She averaged an impressive 12.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game during the week.
In the early hours of the morning on June 17, 2023, Hillary Gerardi ’09 set out from the steps of the St. Michel Church in Chamonix, France. While much of the town slept, Gerardi donned an athletic vest and running shoes as she ran a straight course towards the cloudy peak of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps. Seven hours, 25 minutes, 28 seconds and one ascent and descent of the mountain later, Gerardi had rewritten history, becoming the fastest woman ever to summit and descend Mont Blanc.
On the steps of the Vermont statehouse, former Middlebury College employee and Middlebury Union Middle School administrator Esther Charlestin announced the launch of her gubernatorial campaign. Armed with Hostess Donettes, peach candies and untapped maple syrup, six Middlebury mountaineers strapped skins onto their skis and embarked on a mission to “Everest” the Snow Bowl. They set off at 12 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 22 with the goal of climbing the Snow Bowl enough times to reach 29,029 feet of elevation — Mount Everest’s distance above sea level — in 24 hours. At 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23, the last of the group skied down the Kelton trail, and through a finish line made up of skis and poles.

Reflecting on my experiences as an Orientation Assistant for the new first-year Febs in 2022, a job I originally deemed invigorating and fun, I realized that I will never do it again. I am not alone in this sentiment; my friends who worked as orientation leaders share similar feelings. Like me, they have opted not to apply as orientation leaders again due to the substandard pay they received weeks after they finished their jobs. In 2022, the college decided to pay students a one-time payment of $300 for eight hours of daily training during their training period and once students arrived, leaders usually worked more than five hours per day. A 2022 article in The Middlebury Campus revealed that leaders are paid less than $4 per hour, which is unacceptably low for the work they do.

After years of building excitement, this winter, the Middlebury Snow Bowl has opened for night skiing for the first time. The bowl is now open for night skiing Wednesday through Friday, when the Sheehan lift runs until 8:45 p.m. instead of the usual 4 p.m.

The Board of Trustees Middlebury wasted no time during their brief visit to campus at the end of October. The men’s soccer team scored a pair of huge wins this past weekend by advancing through the first and second stages of the national tournament. Despite an untimely exit from the NESCAC playoffs, Middlebury’s undefeated regular season was enough to earn hosting rights for the first two rounds of the NCAA Division III tournament at South Street Field. The picturesque mountain setting played host to three action-packed matches, with the lineup featuring Middlebury, Babson College, Johns Hopkins University and Western New England University. This marked the Panther's sixteenth appearance and sixth consecutive entry on the national stage.

The basement of The Mill, a popular social house focused on music and student culture, was severely damaged by flooding this summer. The ongoing project to repair the space has closed the beloved community and performance space for the fall 2023 semester, although the renovations are predicted to finish by the start of the spring semester at the latest.
As Vermont’s bright foliage gives way to the crisp chill of winter, the Middlebury Club Soccer season has drawn to a close. With the final whistle of the season already blown, it is time to reflect on the triumphs of this past season on the turf.
