Middlebury Football defeated in season opener to Wesleyan

The Middlebury football team opened their season against Wesleyan on Saturday Sept. 13, losing 31–17 to the Cardinals on the road. Middlebury is now 6–4 in their last 10 season-opening games, and it is their second consecutive loss to Wesleyan. Nonetheless, Saturday’s matchup was a marked improvement over last year’s opener, in which the Panthers lost to Wesleyan 43–7 at home. 

Retro Realm Arcade presses ‘play’

Debbie Gardner of New Haven brought her 4- and 7-year-old grandchildren to Middlebury’s Retro Realm arcade on a recent Thursday so that they could play alongside other kids. But when she spotted familiar games from the arcades of her teen years — including an original 1981 Ms. Pac-Man — she joined right in.

Applications drop to five-year low as acceptance rate increases

The college announced on May 1 that it had received 11,831 applications for the class of 2029 and 2029.5, a six percent drop from last year’s 12,540. Meanwhile, the overall acceptance rate increased to 13.9% from last year’s 12%.

Middlebury baseball’s season started like a car in the dead of Vermont winter — slow to turn over but now running strong. The Panthers extended their winning streak to eight games last weekend, demolishing Skidmore in a doubleheader (13–3, 13–7).

Middlebury men’s baseball trekked three hours southbound to play Amherst in the first NESCAC series of the year. The clubs split the three-game series one to one, with Saturday’s rubber match postponed due to inclement weather.

Recent cuts to the Department of Education by the Trump administration have shaken local school districts across the country, reaching Addison County schools that have faced declining student enrollment and currently rely on federal funding for a variety of purposes. Superintendents of local school districts have expressed their fears of possible funding cuts and voiced support for Vermont’s attempts to fight or impede the looming changes.

Men’s lacrosse rallies for spring season after home loss against Bowdoin

Last Saturday, the #15 nationally ranked Middlebury men’s lacrosse team hosted #7 Bowdoin College in its home opener. Despite a chilly breeze dropping the temperature to single digits, fans and families scattered throughout the stands at Youngman Field, rooting for the Panthers to get into the win column for the first time this season.

Women’s ice hockey overcomes struggles to beat Williams 2–1 in thrilling overtime win

A rowdy crowd of nearly a thousand held their breath as Kylie Quinlan ’25 skated towards the goal, 5:07 elapsed in a tense back-and-forth overtime period. Quinlan, a flash of navy and white, pushing through a sea of purple Ephs jerseys, smacked the puck into the left corner of Williams’ net. Coaches, players and fans alike erupted.

Addison County elects Steven Heffernan to State Senate, ousting five-term incumbent

In an unexpected twist in the race for the Vermont State Senate, Republican challenger Steve Heffernan defeated democratic incumbent Christopher Bray for one of Addison County’s two senate seats. Heffernan’s election was part of a larger victory for Republicans in the state legislature, picking up enough seats to effectively end the 20-year democratic supermajority. 

College Street stabbing case holds hearing, requests sanity assessment

On Oct. 7, 2024, the Criminal Division of the Addison County District Court heard a brief competency hearing for Jerry L. Hoffman, who was charged last spring with attempted murder in the second degree, aggravated assault with a weapon and resisting arrest.

MALT hosts 21st TAM Trek with over 300 participants

The 21st annual Trail Around Middlebury (TAM) Trek took place on Sunday, Sept. 15, hosted by the Middlebury Area Land Trust (MALT). The Trek’s events included a 19-mile loop of the entire trail, 5k and 10k races, and a two-mile fun run open to adult runners and walkers, young children and dogs.

Wesleyan routs football team 43–7 in season opener

The football team’s defense of their NESCAC Championship title from last season started poorly, as Wesleyan University crushed them 43–7 in the season opener. The home loss was the Panther’s largest margin of defeat since a  48–0 loss to Trinity College in 2018.
