The online directory has changed from public to restricted access in order to guard against phishing and other potential security issues. Announced on April 10, the new system requires a Middlebury login to access contact information, as opposed to the previous directory, which made such information available to the public.

A Fox News story published on Feb. 16 discussed an accusation made by StandWithUs Center for Legal Justice that Middlebury is failing to protect Jewish students who face antisemitism on campus. The reporting prompted community responses and the college’s release of a web page titled “Middlebury’s Educational Approaches to the War in Israel and Gaza,” which outlines the college’s community standards and resources available to those affected by the war.

The annual Winter Carnival returned to campus at full capacity last weekend, following a brief ski race hiatus last year. The weekend included Middlebury Carnival ski races as well as on-campus activities organized by Middlebury College Activities Board (MCAB) such as an ice-sculpting competition outside of Proctor Dining Hall, s’more-making on Battell Beach and a formal masquerade-themed ball held in the Virtue Field House on Saturday night.

Through the Axinn Center for the Humanities Middlebury has received a $1.48 million grant from the Mellon Foundation’s Humanities for All Times, an initiative that fosters education and research on migrant justice in Vermont and globally through the creation of thirty new Public Humanities Labs. The news of the grant’s acceptance was announced in a campus-wide email released on Feb. 2.

The Prism Center for Queer and Trans Life at Middlebury is set to open this spring at the Farrell House, providing the first-ever resource center on campus specifically for LGBTQIA+ students. President Laurie Patton and Chief Diversity Officer Miguel Fernández announced the opening of the center in a message to the Middlebury community on June 28, 2021.

After years of building excitement, this winter, the Middlebury Snow Bowl has opened for night skiing for the first time. The bowl is now open for night skiing Wednesday through Friday, when the Sheehan lift runs until 8:45 p.m. instead of the usual 4 p.m.

Students were asked for their input on the design of a new student center last spring when members of the Middlebury administration began actively planning a complete renovation of Proctor Dining Hall’s current design. The college plans to expand the space significantly into a four-story student center and dining hall with the capacity to seat 1,200 students — surpassing Ross Dining Hall as the largest food space on campus by more than 400 seats.

The Middlebury Chapel served as host to over 100 students, faculty and staff for the “Vigil for Palestine,” the evening of Nov. 9. The vigil, planned by the Middlebury Muslim Students Association (MSA) featured a variety of speakers who mourned the loss of life in Gaza and reflected on how the Middlebury community has been affected by the ongoing violence in the region.

Midd Xpress has returned to its normal hours of operation from 8 a.m. to midnight this semester after a period of uncertainty last spring caused by staff shortages and retention issues. However, the Grille is only operational from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays, creating challenges for student employees at Midd Xpress as well as other students looking for more food options at night.

Muslim students fasting for the month of Ramadan from sunrise to sunset are left with limited hours where they can access dining hall meals at regular open times. In response, Middlebury Dining Services has taken measures to accommodate students who are fasting.

Scott Rozelle, a Stanford University professor and economist specializing in development, returned to Middlebury on March 29 to speak about his research on combating mental health among school children in rural China. Rozelle, who holds a doctorate from Cornell University, is one of the co-directors of the Rural Education Action Program (REAP) at Stanford. This is the fourth time Rozelle has visited Middlebury.
