A firsthand account of the stabbing on College Street

Huy Tran ’24 was walking home from Shaw’s Grocery with a friend around 8 p.m. on March 20 when a man approached him from behind and attacked him with a knife. Jerry L. Hoffman, 31, reportedly wielding two knives, stabbed Tran in the back four times.

Ah, the best four years of our lives. Middlebury College is supposed to be more than just a place we go to school. We are a community of students living together — we go to parties together, play sports together and this year, we experienced a total eclipse together. In its sixth year, Zeitgeist seeks to find out the diverse experiences of Middlebury students.
Track and field team celebrates its seniors, gears up for NESCACs

The men’s and women’s track and field teams celebrated their seniors at the final home meet of the season. While the April 20 meet was not scored, the teams reported many personal records (PRs) and high spirits heading into the NESCAC championships at Tufts University this coming weekend.
Women’s golf hits the ground running in first two competitions of spring season

The women’s golf team traveled to Cortland, N.Y. to compete in the Martin and Wallace Invitational, hosted by SUNY Cortland. Despite the first day, April 13, of the tournament being canceled due to unfavorable weather conditions, the Panthers demonstrated resilience throughout the weekend. The team ended up fifth place out of 15 teams with a team total score of 309, showcasing their ability to adapt and compete under pressure.
In deep waters: “Airswimming” dives into life and love in an asylum

“Airswimming” left the audience with laughter, tears and a whole lot of Doris Day songs stuck in their heads. As I left the Hepburn Zoo last weekend, I wiped away the few tears I had shed (a very rare occurrence for me) and ran to tell my friends that it had been a long time since a piece of art had truly moved me the way this show had.
Women’s lacrosse undefeated in yet another stellar season

The women’s lacrosse team is dominating this season in their quest for a third straight NCAA Championship. The team is 13–0 this season and 8–0 in conference play. It is also currently on a forty-one game win streak that dates back to May 15, 2022.
B Striker ’25 wins SGA presidential election

Brandon Straker ’25, known as B Striker, has been elected as Middlebury’s next SGA president. Striker, along with vice presidents Talia Chang ’26 and Daniza Tazabekova ’26, beat opponent Josh Harkins ’25 and his vice-presidential candidates Freddi Mitchell ’25 and Ahmed Awadallah ’26 by a 32-vote margin in a three-day period from April 11 to April 13, the closest an SGA presidential election has been in at least seven years.
New contracted counselor hosts Queer and Trans Student Wellness Day

Adam-Jon Aparicio is the latest addition to the counseling staff at the Parton Center for Health and Wellness (CHW). Aparicio, who identifies as a first-generation college graduate and gay Latino man, is a contracted counselor for students working virtually from Chicago. This past weekend, Aparicio visited Middlebury to connect with students and facilitate the Queer and Trans Student Wellness Day at the Prism Center for Queer and Trans Life on April 13.
Spring sports update

April has arrived, which means the semester is running toward the finish line, and with it, Middlebury’s spring sports teams are arriving at a critical point as they approach the postseason. Since our season preview edition of The Campus on March 7, nearly every spring team has been in action.
Ceglarski named Head Coach of men’s hockey, strives to restore program to prominence

The Middlebury men’s hockey team has a rich tradition of success, with eight national titles, eight NESCAC championships and 47 All-American selections on its resumé. Despite these accolades, the Panthers have struggled in recent history. The team has not had a winning record since the 2012-13 season, and has not won the NESCAC championship since the 2009-10 season.
SGA hosts presidential debate in Wilson Café

The Student Government Association (SGA) and The Middlebury Campus hosted the annual presidential debate for the 2024-2025 academic year in Wilson Café on April 9, co-moderated by Campus editors Ryan McElroy ’25 and Shane Silverman ’24.5. Voting for the election, and for SGA class senators, will open via Presence at noon on April 11 and will close at midnight on April 13.
Into the Archives: the staff at the heart of Middlebury Special Collections

The Special Collections Reading Room is, by design, a quiet space. Researchers pore over the college’s archives, marking discoveries in an excited, hush tone only possible in a library. The space — frequented by college students and varied visitors — is marked by a single glass door as the threshold of the archives, the protective line between public and private areas in the collection.

A student at Middlebury College was stabbed repeatedly yesterday, March 20, while walking down College Street with another person at around 8 p.m. The pair fled to a nearby residence following the stabbing and called 911.
Women’s lacrosse starts the season strong with three consecutive wins

The two-time reigning champion Middlebury women’s lacrosse team began their 2024 campaign this past week, looking to build on an undefeated 2023 season. The week featured away games against Babson College and Amherst College, and a home contest versus Bowdoin College. In that stretch, the Panthers outscored opponents by an impressive combined score of 50–13, winning all three contests comfortably.
Town Meeting Day marked by historic victories, anger over school budgets

Vermont’s small-town character gives residents the unique opportunity to discuss key issues with their community through its annual tradition of Town Meeting Day. Vermonters gathered in their respective towns across the state to convene on topics like municipal and school budgets, as well as selectboard and presidential primary elections. The meetings took place on Monday, March 4 before people voted on ballot-specific items on Tuesday, March 5.
Women’s hockey wins NESCAC Championship, advances to NCAA Tournament

On Saturday, March 2, the Middlebury women’s hockey team bested Hamilton College in a stunning 4–0 shutout to win the NESCAC Tournament. While the margin of victory came as a surprise, the lockdown defense the team played was but another example of the way they have played all season.

Trustees talk tuition, construction, finances for 2023-2024

A winter weekend at Middlebury was host to important decisions by the Board of Trustees. On Feb. 9 and 10, the Board increased tuition and named the Christian A. Johnson Memorial Building plaza, among other discussions of finances, construction projects and language learning.
