Following allegations of dangerous housing and job site conditions for its workers, the Vermont Construction Company signed a preliminary agreement with labor rights nonprofit Building Dignity and Respect Standards Council in January to work toward new safety standards. The company has previously worked at Middlebury College on at least one roofing project, although the college has said it does not expect to use Vermont Construction Company in the future.

A rowdy crowd of nearly a thousand held their breath as Kylie Quinlan ’25 skated towards the goal, 5:07 elapsed in a tense back-and-forth overtime period. Quinlan, a flash of navy and white, pushing through a sea of purple Ephs jerseys, smacked the puck into the left corner of Williams’ net. Coaches, players and fans alike erupted.

This past weekend, Middlebury hosted the NESCAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championship for the first time since 2019. Over four days, the Panthers competed in more than 20 events, setting five school records and achieving multiple NCAA 'B' cut swims, earning them sixth place overall with a total score of 919 points.

Middlebury Winter Carnival returned for its 102nd iteration this weekend, showcasing historic athletic achievements and a packed lineup of on-campus events. A triumphant showing from the Panthers led to their best carnival result in six years, totaling 877.5 points and finishing with a team result of second place. Back on campus, students participated in a range of activities, including an ice-carving competition, a film festival, bonfire, two performances of the Winter Carnival Ice Show and the traditional Winter Carnival Ball.

Last weekend, Middlebury women’s swimming and diving headed to Waterville, Maine to compete in the highly-anticipated 2025 NESCAC Championship. Hosted by Colby College, the four-day weekend kicked off on Thursday, Feb. 13 with the 800 Freestyle Relay, and wrapped up on Sunday, Feb. 16 with the 400 Freestyle Relay.

On Thursday Feb. 13, staff, students and faculty gathered in Mahaney Arts Center (MAC) to celebrate the opening of Rania Matar’s photography exhibition, SHE. Her work will run until April 20, and tells the stories of young women through portraits taken across Lebanon, France, Palestine, Egypt and the U.S.

At my heaviest weigh-in, I clocked in at 311 lbs. I had a BMI of 45.6, which categorized me as morbidly obese. Today I weigh 196 lbs, a 115 lbs weight loss. I can confidently say for the first time in my adult life that I am healthy. People often ask me how I found success. Usually, I tell them something along the lines of “eat less, walk more” or “ hot girl walk,” but in reality, there was a lot more to it.

Last Saturday night, the Middlebury Police Department responded to reports of gunfire behind the Hannaford Supermarket in town. No injuries were reported; six minors and one adult were detained and subsequently released pending an ongoing investigation.

In an unexpected twist in the race for the Vermont State Senate, Republican challenger Steve Heffernan defeated democratic incumbent Christopher Bray for one of Addison County’s two senate seats. Heffernan’s election was part of a larger victory for Republicans in the state legislature, picking up enough seats to effectively end the 20-year democratic supermajority.

On Nov. 2, the Jerusalem Quartet flooded the Mahaney Arts Center with passionate string music ranging from classical to modern. Celebrating their 30th season, Jerusalem Quartet returned to Middlebury with a program of Haydn, Shostakovich and Dvorák.

Every other week in the second half of the 1980s, students gathered for what began as a book club. As Associate Professor of Political Science Sebnem Gumuscu tells the story, students and faculty packed onto sofas and rugs to socialize and discuss what they had read. The event, which inspired the commons system, put into practice the understanding that newly acquired ideas should change how you live your life. The commons system, which lasted from 1992 to 2019, was the institutionalization of such a principle.

It was finally Oct. 12, and I was walking towards the town green for the third annual MiddPride, hearing cheers of children and live music getting louder, and seeing flashes of rainbow shine under the autumn sunshine. Having recently attended a Pride parade in Hollywood, overrun with corporations such as Disney and Citibank and law enforcement groups like the Los Angeles Police Department, the authenticity of this tight knit community boasting queerness was palpable.
