As we headed west on Vermont Route 125, the sun was still yet to fully rise. A layer of fog shrouded much of the landscape, so dense and defined you felt you could almost grab it. Minutes later, rays of sun bathed the valleys and farm fields in sleepy hues of orange and yellow. The fog reluctantly lifted, and soon I had truly woken up.

On Monday, Sept. 30, Middlebury College released an update on its process of examining the endowment for investments in or connections to the war in Gaza. The college announced that it would not be taking any actions towards divestment from war profiteering, claiming it only maintains minimal investments in companies suggested for review.

There is nothing quite like the feeling of sitting in a theater waiting for the curtain to rise, for the actors to emerge on stage and transport the audience to another world. That anticipation, the rustling of programs and the low chatter of friends and family eagerly awaiting the start of the show filled the Hepburn Zoo this past weekend as audiences came in to see the 29th annual First Year Show.

As conversations about the upcoming presidential election build on campus, Middlebury students continue to register to vote and request absentee ballots from their home states across the country. Historically, Middlebury students have had a widespread interest in voting: During the previous presidential election, 98% of Middlebury students at the time were registered to vote, a 23% increase from the 2018 midterm elections.

On the one-year anniversary of the Oct. 7 terrorist attack in Israel, followed by the ongoing war in Gaza, members of the Middlebury community came together in a variety of spaces this Monday to mourn the lives lost and reflect on the past year of violence.

On Sept. 23, U.S. News & World Report released its 2025–2026 national liberal arts colleges rankings, which dropped Middlebury to 19th place — eight positions lower than last year, tied with Grinnell College and Washington and Lee University. This ranking is Middlebury’s lowest since its first appearance on the list in 1988, when the college was ranked 17th.

On Sunday afternoon, people from all over Vermont gathered at the Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society (CVUUS) for a meaningful dialogue featuring former Vermont Governor Howard Dean, gubernatorial candidate Esther Charlestin and Addie Lentzner ’27, a delegate to the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC). The dialogue focused on the importance of active participation in democracy, especially by women and young people. The speakers explored how everyone can engage more deeply in civic life, not only by voting in the upcoming presidential election, but also by taking part in local elections and community decision-making.

Amidst balloons, flowers and cake, the Ilsley Public Library last Saturday celebrated the centennial anniversary of its completion and official dedication to Colonel and Mrs. Silas A Ilsley on Sept. 25, 1924. The Ilsley Library 100th Birthday Bash also marked the start of a new chapter for the library as it moves forward with the Ilsley 100 Project, a major renovation and expansion of the library building. Activities at the event included a birthday cake bakeoff, attendees singing happy birthday to the library, a story time for children and a presentation on the history of the library.

On Sunday afternoon, a group of Addison County residents gathered in the cozy and historic barn at The Tillerman Inn in Bristol, Vt. to celebrate the release of Issue 17 of Zig Zag Lit Mag — a local arts and literature magazine — and its seventh accompanying poetry chapbook, “All the Grief” by Alice Eckles, a Middlebury-based artist and poet. Attendees enjoyed an afternoon during which 13 of the 31 total published writers and artists read their work from the new issue out loud, a biyearly tradition Zig Zag has upheld to commemorate every issue to date.

This summer, Middlebury’s main street gained a charming and unique addition known as Chim Chimney Bakery. Open Thursdays to Saturdays from noon to 7 p.m. and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays, Chim Chimney specializes in a Hungarian pastry known as a chimney cake.

The football team’s defense of their NESCAC Championship title from last season started poorly, as Wesleyan University crushed them 43–7 in the season opener. The home loss was the Panther’s largest margin of defeat since a 48–0 loss to Trinity College in 2018.

A mainstay of the Middlebury arts scene, the Performing Arts Series is back for its 105th season with a lineup as rich as it is varied.
