The men’s and women’s hockey teams both had poignant and celebratory weekends. From celebrating the female senior players during Friday's game, to spreading awareness about sarcoma cancer on Saturday, the games meant more than just 60 minutes spent on ice fighting for the puck.

Lucien “Luke” J. Hotte Jr., assistant coach and cornerstone of Middlebury College’s track and field program for nearly four decades, passed away on Feb. 10, 2024, at the age of 77.

As the snow piles up on campus and winter chills threaten the hopes of an early spring, one of the best ways to stay warm (and entertained) is to attend a local art event. This semester’s offerings range from paintings to theatre, each bringing their unique energy to the Middlebury community. After months of deliberation and an extended voting period, over two-thirds of Middlebury students voted in favor of two of the three proposed changes to the Honor Code. The results, which Dean of Students Joe Russell announced on Jan. 14, removed the moral obligation to report Honor Code violations and implemented a sliding scale of penalties for violations, with 73.4% and 89.2% of voting students answering yes, respectively. The proposal to allow professors to proctor exams did not pass, receiving only 45.8% support.

Last month, the Faculty Council passed significant changes to the college’s graduation honors system that will go into effect at the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year.

Faculty voted 79 to 15 in favor of a proposed change to the college’s Latin honors system on Dec. 10 at a plenary faculty meeting in Wilson Hall. The new honors system will drastically restrict the number of graduates who receive Latin honors, eliminate the Valedictorian and Salutatorian titles, and remove the semester-based College Scholar distinction.

Efficiency Vermont has expanded its flood recovery rebates, offering significant financial assistance to eligible households and businesses affected by the flooding during the summers of 2023 and 2024 for heating systems, weatherization and appliances. Homeowners can receive up to $29,500 in rebates, while businesses are eligible for up to $16,000 in cash back on essential equipment and upgrades.

Tiger Xie ’26.5 is making his mark in his first season as goalkeeper on the men's soccer team. Having grown up between Shanghai and Toronto, Xie took an unconventional path to Middlebury athletics, joining as a walk-on after playing for the club soccer team. Birth control can be an overwhelming topic. Social media, news reports and day-to-day conversations are rife with false information surrounding contraception. SPECS is here to break down some misconceptions and provide accurate resources for students, although we acknowledge that we are NOT medical providers and therefore do not offer direct advice nor recommendations. An informed, mutual understanding of available birth control methods is an important part of informed consent, and all parties engaging in a sexual activity are responsible for prioritizing one another’s reproductive health. Often the responsibility of thinking about and accessing birth control falls on partners with uteruses, but that doesn’t mean that people without uteruses shouldn’t be informed about it.

In 2020, the then-President of MiddVotes submitted an op-ed to The Campus arguing that Middlebury students should create a more robust culture of voting. It’s been four years since then, and as the current President of MiddVotes, I am proud to say that we not only has Middlebury a culture of voting, but we have been recognized by peer institutions for being leaders in civic engagement. Despite this success, students must continue to engage in state, local and national politics by voting, staying informed and interacting with the community opportunities available to them.
