To the Editor:
The cost of a Middlebury education is rising. Beyond even the exorbitant escalation of tuition costs, your paper noted the outrageous rise in costs for class textbooks. Yet, the school has done little to curtail this expense for students.
There can, however, be a solution, which eases the pain on the students' wallets. Simply place two copies of every required book on reserve in the library at the start of each semester. After investing tens of millions of dollars in that facility, it only seems right that the school use it to its full potential. Plus, perhaps it would make professors think twice about assigning unnecessary books that could be placed on E-Reserve, helping the students who buy the books as well.
Maybe the school has a vested interest in profiting from the sale of these books, and maybe professors are either profiting or have colleagues who are profiting from their royalties. This should, therefore, be an issue taken up by the Student Government Association as soon as possible to help students beginning next semester. I'd encourage the newly elected SGA to take action now.
Sincerely,
