Petition in Support of an African-American Studies Major Submitted by the Student Government Association

On Thursday, Feb. 28, student leaders from the campus community convened to discuss the possibility of establishing an African-American Studies Major here at Middlebury. Recognizing that any decision to create such a major, which ultimately lies with the Faculty of the College, would require demonstrating student interest and student body support, the group decided that circulating a petition around campus would serve as a means for illustrating this overwhelming support that exists here today. The petition was placed at The Grille and at Proctor, and various student organizations also circulated the petition at weekly group meetings. What follows is an adequate demonstration of the support that exists at Middlebury. These community members who have signed below vary in gender, race, religion and years of graduation. What can be a more appropriate message than this: a diverse student body advocating one shared interest.

We now begin a process that will only falter if existing student support for this initiative is not sustained. The SGA pledges that this will not happen in our time here. I thank you for your support and hope that this petition will serve as impetus for a productive and promising discussion among all members of the Middlebury College Community.
