Middlebury unveiled the latest addition to its athletic facilities on Sunday, April 7, as the baseball and softball teams gathered to celebrate their newly renovated, $2.8 million fields. The ceremony was attended by players, coaches, parents and donors ahead of the teams’ games.

April has arrived, which means the semester is running toward the finish line, and with it, Middlebury’s spring sports teams are arriving at a critical point as they approach the postseason. Since our season preview edition of The Campus on March 7, nearly every spring team has been in action.

The 4x400 relay of the women’s track and field team, composed of Michelle Louie ’24, Anna Krouse ’25.5, Lily Bulczynski ’26 and Mary Elliot ’26, competed in the NCAA Championships this past weekend in Virginia Beach, Va. The team entered the race as the #12 seed and finished in the same spot in the preliminary round on Friday, missing out on a trip to the finals.

On Saturday, Feb. 17, Alexa Mustafaj ’25 drew a foul from Amherst College’s Maya Cwalina with a minute and 16 seconds remaining in their NESCAC quarterfinal matchup. Mustafaj stepped up to the line, took a deep breath and sank the ensuing free throw. The shot did more than just put the game beyond the Mammoths’ reach. Marking her 1,603rd point, the shot made Mustafaj the highest ever scorer in the 47 year history of Middlebury women’s basketball.

In the early hours of the morning on June 17, 2023, Hillary Gerardi ’09 set out from the steps of the St. Michel Church in Chamonix, France. While much of the town slept, Gerardi donned an athletic vest and running shoes as she ran a straight course towards the cloudy peak of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps. Seven hours, 25 minutes, 28 seconds and one ascent and descent of the mountain later, Gerardi had rewritten history, becoming the fastest woman ever to summit and descend Mont Blanc.

For most Middlebury students, the end of exams in December signifies a return home and a break from the regular routine of school life. However, for many of Middlebury’s student athletes, winter break means a time for training camps and extra competitions. Since our last edition of The Campus on Dec. 7, nearly all of Middlebury’s winter teams have been in action.

Despite having plenty of moments to cheer for their team throughout the match, Middlebury volleyball fans left Pepin Gymnasium in silence at the end of Sunday’s NESCAC quarterfinal as Williams College walked away with a 3–2 win. The Panthers now await their fate in the national tournament as a selection committee assigns the at-large berths.

Of the 619 athletes nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award, only 30 were named to the final shortlist. Middlebury’s own Elise Morris ’22.5 was one of them.

Climate awareness. Environmental advocacy. Green initiative. Whatever you choose to call it, it is near impossible to disentangle Middlebury College from the environmental movement. Since creating the nation’s first environmental studies department in 1965, Middlebury has long been at the vanguard of conversations on climate change and environmental systems. Now, with $7 million in donations from the Erol Foundation and NextWorld Philanthropies, Middlebury looks to take the next step forward with the expansion of the Climate Action Program.

When the seniors of Middlebury field hockey stood out on the line for the final time of the regular season at Peter Kohn Field, there was a tangible excitement in the air. Typically, a matchup against the seventh ranked team in the nation might instill a fear of not being able to win in front of a cheering home crowd. For the Panthers, however, a win seemed almost inevitable — it only took three and a half minutes of play against Tufts for the Panthers to score. From there, they never looked back, securing a dominant 6–0 victory.

Dynasty. In the world of sport, this word immediately conjures images of Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls or Larry Bird’s Boston Celtics. In Middlebury, the word cannot be said without thinking immediately of the field hockey team.

In the coming weeks, many of the sports teams around Middlebury are squaring off against NESCAC opponents for their respective postseasons. However, the NESCAC season has already concluded for men’s and women’s cross country, and both teams are now turning their attention to regional championships.
