The snow is melting, the ice is thawing and students are busily hurrying to and from midterms. Spring has arrived at Middlebury, and with it comes the return of Middlebury’s spring sports teams. In this edition of team previews, we take a look at all the Panthers in action this spring — athletes to watch, results to expect and games you can’t miss — to provide fans with a comprehensive viewer’s guide to Middlebury athletics this season.

Amidst the excitement of an electric home atmosphere, Middlebury tallied 739 total points in the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) Championship this weekend, securing third place behind University of Vermont and Dartmouth College to conclude the regular season. The alpine and nordic races took place at the Middlebury Snow Bowl and Rikert Outdoor Center, giving the Panthers a home-hill advantage at the storied Middlebury Carnival.

On Jan. 7, 2023, former Middlebury Nordic athlete Sophia Laukli became the youngest American to win an individual cross-country World Cup race and the first to win the “Final Climb” of the Tour de Ski race in Val di Fiemme, Italy.

Since passing the 500-point milestone, Noah Osher ’23.5 has been acutely aware of his path to joining the 1000-point club. Heading into Middlebury’s game against Bowdoin College on Jan. 12, his sights were set on the minimum of 22 points he needed to achieve a career-long goal. Averaging 17.9 points per game so far this season, whether or not Osher would hit 1,000 points by the end of the season looked like a certainty heading into last weekend’s double competitions against Bowdoin and Colby College, but the captain hoped to do it after just the first game on Friday night.

Despite a turbulent start to the season, Middlebury womens’ basketball has been trending upward in recent weeks. After walking away from the Middlebury Tip-Off Classic tournament 0–2 and dropping close games to both Framingham State University (53-56) and Springfield College (46–56), the team has since won three of four recent games, claiming big wins against Vermont State University Castleton (75–57) and Union College (68–50).

After an impressive NESCAC championship win on Nov. 5, the Middlebury field hockey team is showing no signs of slowing down as they cruised through the opening two rounds of the NCAA tournament this past weekend. Confidence in the team was high already after the Panthers made a win over ninth-ranked Williams look easy in the conference final, but after two rounds there is even more reason to believe the team can capture its eighth national title in Newport News, Va.

The Middlebury women’s soccer team has officially concluded their season, finishing ninth in the NESCAC despite a win against second place conference opponent Williams College on Tuesday, Oct. 24, narrowly missing the opportunity to compete for the NESCAC title.

Amy Delman ’24 is a senior captain of the Middlebury women’s tennis team and economics major, originally from Great Neck, N.Y. She recently concluded her fall season after advancing to the quarterfinals in the national ITA Cup alongside her doubles partner, Sahana Raman ’25. Middlebury John G. McCullough Professor of Economics Caitlin Myers and her team of 30 student research assistants have gathered a variety of data about abortion access in the United States. The information the team collected — ranging from the number of open facilities to the average distance Americans have to travel to access abortions — has helped inform choices made by policymakers, national news organizations and individuals about abortion access.

For 22 full seasons, the face of the Middlebury Football program was Head Coach Bob Ritter, who led the team to three NESCAC championships and mentored many generations of student-athletes. For 11 of those years, Doug Mandigo ’96 worked alongside Ritter as the team’s defensive coordinator, helping to build Middlebury football into the program it is today. Ritter stepped into the role of Assistant Athletic Director this past December, leaving Mandigo to take over as the Michael G. Heinecken Head Coach of Football.

Approaching the end of a dominant season, there is no doubt that Middlebury has more than a few critical players that have contributed to the success they have found on the field; yet, this year, three stars, Katie George ’23.5, Amy Griffin ’24.5 and Charlotte Marks ’23.5 stand out as All-Conference winners for their consistent and unrelenting efforts on the field, guiding the team to its fifth consecutive NESCAC title, 50th NCAA tournament win and to the NCAA Final Four, with a chance to compete for another National Championship.

Heading into this season, Middlebury field hockey was set to defend their title as national champions, the newly resurfaced Peter Kohn Field, their conference trophy and their seemingly never-ending win streak. Updates to the leaderboard this year have continued to confirm the program’s hegemony, highlighting an ongoing undefeated record unlike any before by the NCAA.

Blue hair, hoarse voices, broken records and a conference championship title — following the NESCAC Championship meet last weekend, women’s track & field has a lot to celebrate. Driven by four first-place and two second-place finishes, the Panthers scored 149 points, earning their first league title since 2000.

Women’s tennis (11–4) kept its foot on the gas pedal this weekend, recording consecutive shutout victories against Connecticut College (2–13) and Trinity College (5–10) in Connecticut.

Whether there was magic in the air to celebrate the graduating seniors or a laser focus on securing the top seed in the NESCAC, the stars aligned for No. 1 women’s lacrosse (13–0) on Saturday in a fiercely anticipated matchup against No. 4 Colby (11–2). In what was expected to be a bloodbath for the conference lead, Middlebury dominated, 13–5, maintaining their perfect season record and taking another step towards NCAAs.
