Power Shift stresses global change

On April 19-21, between 40 and 50 students from the College, local high school students and other community members united on campus for the Power Shift Vermont 2008 conference. On Monday, the group traveled to Montpelier to demand that the Vermont legislature and governor pass a strong version of the climate solution bill.

Spring symposium showcases research

Last Friday, over 100 students showcased their undergraduate research either through visual or oral presentation in McCardell Bicentennial Hall during the Second Annual Spring Student Symposium. Members of the College community met in Great Hall to acknowledge the work completed over the school year by Middlebury students.

Lead prompts new search in Garza case

New aerial photography taken as part of the Nick Garza disappearance investigation revealed an 'object of interest' in Otter Creek, according to officials. The discovery provided investigators with the first new clue in recent memory and prompted a second search of the creek.

Voting returns spark runoff

Last week's Student Government Association (SGA) Presidential election has left the question of who will take Max Nardini's '08 place undecided. With the SGA having voted to withhold full election results, the only thing known about last Friday's vote is that Hiba Fakhoury '09 and Bobby Joe Smith '09 are now the only candidates left running.

Committee supports Carnival break

The Calendar Committee has made a change to its recommendation to give a break from classes for the Spring Student Symposium in response to student objections to the original plan. As a result, the Winter Carnival will likely enjoy its traditional Friday without classes in the 2009-2010 academic year.

Council continues social house discussion

Following up on its previous recommendation that first-years be allowed to pledge a social house during their second semester at the College, the Community Council convened on April 21 to discuss whether or not February-admitted students should also be allowed to pledge in the spring during their first semester.

Housing reform prompts sharp criticism

Complaints about the College's annual room draw process have spiked in recent weeks as an unusually high number of rising juniors and seniors failed to secure their preferred housing options for the next academic year. Students and administration officials attributed the housing difficulties in part to the College's unanticipated over-enrollment troubles that came with the Class of 2011.

College plans meeting to solicit input and decide fate of 51 Main St

Dean of the College Tim Spears discussed the impending opening of 51 Main, the newly renovated space at 51 Main Street that will become a bar and lounge, in a brief meeting on-site on April 22. Plans to turn the space into a chocolate bar have been postponed pending its success as a lounge and community feedback, but its use as a music venue and area to showcase student works is almost certain.

Madson staff urge students vaccinations The University of Wisconsin at Madison (UW-Madison) has begun a campaign to ensure all students are properly vaccinated against the measles after a recent outbreak in the community. Four came down with the measles over the past month and the news prompted officials to call for complete vaccinations for all members of the school community, citing the dangers of the illness.

I stretched under the blankets and pulled on my boots, shivering in the cold. The blue light of morning was breaking to violet, and I could hear Hamada's brother Suleiman scurrying around outside, breaking twigs for the morning fire.
