Old Chapel hikes comprehensive fee by 3.4 percent for 2010-2011

Middlebury’s comprehensive fee for the 2010-2011 academic year will rise 3.4 percent to $52,120, President of the College Ronald D. Liebowitz confirmed on April 7. Factoring in the $380 annual student activities fee, this latest increase brings the total price of a year at Middlebury to $52,500.

Liebowitz unveils paradigm shift for Middlebury in landmark speech

In a landmark address on Friday, President of the College Ronald D. Liebowitz outlined a sweeping new vision for Middlebury’s future that would raise the profile of the College’s affiliates while reducing the financial burden carried by students and families. Liebowitz’ remarks reflect a growing recognition among administrators that the College’s historical business model has become unsustainable.

“Demand for a four-year liberal arts degree, while still great, is not inelastic,” Liebowitz said. “There will be a price point at which even the most affluent of families will question their investment.”

College unsure of biofuel’s origins

Since the successful opening of the College’s biomass gasification plant last January, community members raised questions about the plant’s impact on Vermont forests as well as the overall environmental integrity of the biomass initiative.
